Because we don’t have any castles in Iceland, mother nature decided to make one for us.
Londrangar cliffs
Snæfellsnes
Snæfellsnes
Uniquely-formed remnants of ancient basalt volcanic dikes sticking out from the sea.
Londrangar and the hill Svalthufa are the remains of a crater, which has been eroded to its present form by the sea.
The farmers in the area never made or make hay on the hill, because it is said to belong to the elves living in the area.
Younger lava fields surround this old crater ruin. The higher pillar (75m) was first climbed in 1735 and the lower (61 m) in 1938.
Below the hill you may find Thufubjarg cliff where according to a folktale the poet Kolbeinn Joklaskald had an encounter with the Devil.
On these cliffs, puffins and fulmars have their nests.
Seeing from a distance, Lóndrangar looks like a huge castle reaching out to the sea. Lóndrangar are uniquely formed basalt volcanic dykes sticking out from the ocean and are the remains of a crater, which has been eroded to its present form by the sea. Lóndrangar consists of two pillars or stacks, one of 75m and the other one of 61m. They are located on the southern part of Snæfellsnes peninsula in west Iceland.
If you are surfing around Snæfellsnes, you won't miss those majestic sea stacks. They are really impressive reaching out surrounded by rough lava covered with green soft moss that looks like a green carpet. I recommend you take a little walk once you are there and go to the left from the parking place where the sign says “Þúfubjarg”. It's not a long walk and once you are there you will sense the magnificent power of nature. The cliffs are high and steep and when looking down the only thing you see are wild waves smashing on the rocks down there along with the squawking birds. Both puffins and fulmars nest there.
Lóndrangar are two prominent rocks, protruding from the coast just east of the lighthouse at Malarrif on the southern edge of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
